So shameless self-promotion is terrible simply because of the degree to which you take it.

Lots of new businesses are born every minute in the world. The market for your product is extremely competitive. In the past, people only had to bother about their next-door competitors, however, today, with the invention of the internet, competition is worldwide (usually reffered to as the global economy). Today, people are bombarded with a limitless number of products, so to be able to break through to customers will require you to carry out several forms of promotion. One of which being self- promotion. 

Even before launching your business, you need to get the word out there about it, build anticipation, and make sure your product is able to fulfill every one of its promises. Most times, the better you are at self-promotion, the higher the chances of your business becoming viable. This is quite serious because statistics have shown that only 50% of business survive beyond their first five years after being established.

Self-promoting your business can take various forms. You can promote your business online using ads, work on your local Search Engine Optimization (SEO), register it on Google My Business, have influencers talking about it or writing reviews on it, etc. These are examples of healthy self-promotion initiatives.

Annoying your friends and family to pass out flyers, talking about your business in awkward situations are examples of shameless self-promotion. They are most likely just going to make people not want to spend time with you and be interested in your business in general.

Bothering friends and family to patronize your business:

You owe it to your business to ask your friends and family to try out your product or service. Asking them is quite different from bothering them. This is the most common mistake most business owners make. 

Yes! Tell them about your business, but don’t over flog it or you will end up chasing friends and family away from you, something you obviously want to avoid in the first place.

Note that there is nothing wrong with you expecting your friends and family to patronize and tell others about your business but know that they are under no obligation to do so. 

You are turning any topic into a sales pitch:

It is essential for you to talk about your business; however, doing so at the right time is more critical. It would be a bad idea for you to talk about your business all day long to every single person you run into. It is the fastest way to lose people’s interest and respect – the two of the most important things you need as a business owner. 

Simply don’t try to convert every single conversation into a sales pitch.
