Having an organized website, where people can easily navigate between pages and know where to find what they need, is a must to keep visitors coming back. A structured menu is a perfect tool to guide your users to the content they are looking for.
In this tutorial, you can learn some simple techniques to create and customize your menu and keep your website looking sharp.
How to Create a Menu?
To create a menu, go to your website admin dashboard and, on the left-hand side, click on Appearance-> Menus. Select the Create a new menu action in the blue button, at the top of the page. Give your new menu a name and click on Create Menu.
Add Items to the Menu
Now that you defined your new menu, you can begin to add items to it. In the left column, you will find your website’s Pages, Posts, and Categories that you can select and add to the menu. Simply select the items on the left and click on Add to Menu for them to be added to your new menu.
It’s also possible to include Custom Links in the menu, for instance, if you want to incorporate a link for an external website, not listed on your pages. You need to set an URL and the link text that will appear on the menu. Then, add it to the menu.
Delete Items From the Menu
So you added something by mistake? No fuss. All you need to do is to click on the little arrow at the right side of the item to make it open, press the Remove button below and save your changes.
Customize your Menu Items
To customize your item, click on the small right arrow.
This is the title of the item that will show up on your menu.
Select it if you wish to disable the link to the page.
A mega menu is a drop-down menu with a multi-level selection that allows users to see more sections of the website using one menu only. You can select it, define if you want auto-width, the number of columns it will have, and if you want to hide its headers.
If you create a sub item (more on that below), you can also choose any of your saved layouts and widget areas to display on one of the mega menu items.
Make the Menu Item Visible to
There is an option to display the menu item only if your user is logged in or logged out. If you want it to show to all users regardless, pick the visible to everyone option. If you’re running a membership website you may want to limit access to some pages or areas of your website to registered users only, who have been flagged with the Subscriber or Member user role.
Make a Multi-level Menu
Using ‘drag and drop’, you can move your menu items up and down to change the order they appear, or left and right to create sub-levels within the menu. If you want a section to be subordinated to other, just position your mouse on it and, holding the left mouse button, drag it to the right. Save your changes when you are done. The sub-menus will work as drop-down menus.
Choose the Menu’s Location
We are almost done! All it’s left is to choose where you want your menu to appear.
Use the menu settings for the location of the menu you are editing.
At the menu settings, you can define if you would like to automatically add new top-level pages to the menu, as you create them. This way you don’t need to go to the menu settings and manually add them. You can also decide where you want your menu to be displayed on the website. If you want it to also appear on the mobile version, make sure that you tick the Mobile box.
Use the Manage Locations settings to assign distinct menus to different locations.
You can also navigate to the Manage Locations section to view the available menu locations, which may help you choose and see the available menus.
You’re all set! Don’t forget always to save your changes.
