You have made a great choice, Congratulations! It must have been a steep learning process to understand why Avoori is more suitable to your growing business needs.
The MailChimp to Avoori migration should take less than 10 minutes and comprise of only two simple steps. We won’t be covering all the general Avoori Email Marketing settings though, that has already been covered into detail in other articles.
You can use any of the two methods to import subscribers from MailChimp. One is to export subscribers directly from your MailChimp account via the CSV file. Another one is to import from MailChimp using an API key.
We will cover the two simple steps for both the methods. So that you have a complete understanding of migration and can easily do it yourself.
Method 1 – Automatic Import
Avoori Newsletters allows you to connect to MailChimp using the API to directly import subscribers.
Step 1: Generate a MailChimp API key
You will just need to generate a MailChimp API key once and then go to Newsletters > Subscribers and then choose Import on the top of the screen. Then you will have the option to choose “Import from Mailchimp”.
Just enter your API key and click “Verify”. That’s it, you now have an Avoori to MailChimp connection.
Step 2: Import Subscriber Lists
Select the list (or multiple lists) you want to import from MailChimp. Click “Next Step”.
On the next page, you’re provided with the same subscribers’ data preview and get all the same options we discussed in Step 2 of Method 1.
When you’re done making changes, Click “Next Step” and you will finally see the success message (same message as in Step 2 of Method 1) if all goes well.
Method 2 – Manual Import
Step 1: Exporting MailChimp Subscribers
As you login to MailChimp Dashboard, you will see a “Lists” as the third link from the left at the main dashboard navigation menu.
Clicking Lists link would bring you to the Lists overview page, where you need to select the list you want to export subscribers from.
While Avoori has the ability to import custom fields contained in the CSV export via MailChimp. It’s much more meaningful to filter out the columns while exporting if you don’t need it (certain columns) at all. You can do so by clicking on the “Toggle Columns” link at the top left of the screen. You will then be able to deselect the fields you do not wish to export.
Once you finalized the columns to export and checked the list you want to export, click “Export List” button found next to “Toggle Columns”.
As you export the list, MailChimp will trigger the download of a .zip file. The compressed zip will contain 3 CSV files.
- Subscribed users
- Cleaned users
- Unsubscribed users
To import the list to Avoori Newsletters, you will use the subscribed users CSV file as others files are not needed.
Step 2: Importing into Avoori Newsletters
Navigate to Newsletters > Subscribers > Import
From there, you can click “Upload a File” label and choose the subscribed users CSV file you’ve exported from MailChimp and click on “Next step”.
You will now be able to preview the subscriber’s data from the import. You will also be able to assign fields to any custom import fields. For example, if an existing Newsletters List doesn’t have a header that’s found in the imported list. All such columns will be set to “Ignore Field”. You will then have the option to either create a new custom field in the Newsletters List with a unique name or map the values to an existing custom field.
Once you are done with the basic list configurations, click “Next step”.
If all goes well and your list is properly formatted, you will see a success message that goes like this.
XYZ number of subscribers added to “XYZ List”.
XYZ existing subscribers were updated and added to “XYZ List”.
